The Florida QSO Party will be held on Saturday April 25, 2015 at the Al Wilkie Park in Hastings. The park is located two blocks south of the traffic light in Hastings.
The St. Augustine Amateur Radio Society (SAARS) will team up with the Palatka Amateur Radio Club (PARC) in Hastings this Saturday to participate in the Florida QSO party. Plan to join in the fun. Set-Up will begin at 10:00am and we will start calling CQ at noon. The SAARS Club call, N4AUG, will be used during the event. Plans are to make as many contacts as possible between noon and 10:00pm.
Don’t miss out – Meet those Hams that you only hear on the air, help make contacts, learn from the Elmer’s, and enjoy hot dogs and chips to be served between 5:30 – 6:30pm. Many of us will head to the park following the 7:30am breakfast social at Theo’s. So join us for breakfast as well.
WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in March 2015 SAARS members came together to dismantle the antennas and tower of SAARS silent key Samuel Snook Jr., W4CXM. The new homeowner contacted a SAARS member inquiring if anyone would be willing to take down the tower and antennas. After only a couple of calls plans were in motion. (View the pictures)
Jim Morrell KF4MX, Doug Stewart KI4NAD, Rick Hatton KK4GGL, and Alan Alsobrook KD4QOF all came together to tackle the project. Four hours later the tower was down and all items were removed. SAARS President, Doug Stewart KI4NAD, advised that some of the useable items could be used at field day while other parts and pieces might be given to members.
There is little doubt that Mr. Snook is smiling down on us. He would surely be very happy to know that he has once again helped SAARS continue it’s momentum and contributed to the growth of amateur radio in St. Augustine, FL.
During the March 3rd, 2015 meeting the St. Augustine Amateur Radio Society recognized former President Kerry Hinkley for the many years of dedicated service to SAARS. Current President Doug Stewart presented Hinkley with a certificate honoring him as President Emeritus as well as a Lifetime Membership in the club.
I saw this video linked on QRZ.com and had to share it:
We had a good turn out for our testing session with five examinees and eight VEs. Two were testing for Technician and three for Extra. All five passed. Congratulations to the new and upgrading Hams.
Our next testing session is scheduled for April 11.
It was a fun weekend for all. No matter if you were there one, two, or all three days everyone could be found having a GREAT Time.
So, if you missed out this year it’s time to do what we are already doing. Plan for next year. The 2016 HamCation is February 12, 13, and 14, 2016. A group of us will be camping on the grounds. We’d love for as many of you as possible to join in on the fun. And there will be a cookout for SAARS & PARC members on one of the evenings around 5pm.

Winter Field Day 2015 has come and gone. Winter Field Day was established by the Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio in 2007. It has become an annual event.
This year the Palatka Amateur Radio Club, with members of the St. Augustine Amateur Radio Society, participated in an event located at Triangle Park in Palatka. Antennas were raised (and lowered), lessons were learned, contacts were made and fun was had by young and (not so) old. Pictures are up.
Don’t forget, the Florida QSO Party, Field Day and the ILLW International Lighthouse Weekend are not far away.
Next up is Hamcation in Orlando. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone.
